Megan Rapinoe gets injured minutes into NWLS final ending her career with a championship loss

The NWLS final between Megan Rapinoe’s OL Reign vs Gotham FC ended in a victory for the New York team while also having a bittersweet finish for the USWNT’s captain when she had an injury only minutes into the game.

Megan Rapinoe received a standing ovation at Snapdragon Stadium

Megan Rapinoe is a unique player on and off the field, and on her last game which was held at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego California, she was ready to give it all until just a few minutes into the first half she had to be helped off the field as she had a sprain in her foot that prevented her from continue playing, however, she had helped her team score the first goal of the evening.

In the end, her team lost 1-2 to New York’s Gotham FC, coached by Juan Carlos Amoros, and had the Spanish players Maitane Lopez and Esther Gonzalez in their ranks.

After her injury, Rapinoe showed a nervous laugh while leaving the field as possible she could not believe how her last game would end. Although she had to leave the field, she also helped her team in the few minutes she played when she passed the ball and the team almost scored.

The crowd at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego sent her off with a standing ovation, but also with some disappointment.

The USWNT star had to watch the game from the bench and was itching to get back in the field, meanwhile, Lynn Williams scored in the 24th minute after a great run down the right by Margaret Purce to put Gotham ahead.

Rosa Lavelle equalized for the OL Reign five minutes later on a quick attack, taking advantage of the hole left by the opposing center backs in a phenomenal run.

The next goal came when Esther Gonzalez headed from the center of the box off a corner kick taken by Purce, in what proved to be the decisive goal of the match.
