Huge sinkhole opens in the middle of a soccer field in Illinois and swallows the pitch

A video is circulating on social networks that captured the exact moment in which a huge sinkhole opened right in the middle of a soccer field in Illinois, United States. The video shows that the sinkhole devoured a light pole and a large part of the artificial grass that covers the soccer field in Illinois in a matter of seconds.

However, far from it being a natural phenomenon of the soil, the United States authorities announced that the culprit could be identified as a mining industry. A security camera recorded the moment when a huge sinkhole more than 30 meters wide and 9 meters deep opened on a soccer field at Gordon Moore Park, in Alton, Illinois.

The camera records show that the sinkhole formed shortly after 9:00 a.m. today, June 27, at which time no one was inside the facilities. After the video of the sinkhole formed in the middle of a soccer field in Illinois, United States, went viral, authorities began investigations to find the causes.

The first investigations indicate that the sinkhole was caused by an underground mine belonging to the mining company New Frontier Materials. “No one was injured in the incident, which was reported to Mine Safety and Health Administration officials in accordance with applicable regulations,” a company representative stated.

For their part, the residents of Alton have expressed their concern about the rest of the areas that border New Frontier Materials, while demanding exhaustive measures to avoid new incidents.
